How to Create a Home Inventory (Step-by-Step)

June 2, 2026 · 5 min read

A home inventory is simply a record of what you own and where you keep it. It’s one of those small projects that pays off constantly — when you’re hunting for a stored item, moving, decluttering, or filing an insurance claim. Here’s how to build one without spending your whole weekend on it.

1. Pick your method: app vs spreadsheet

You can use a spreadsheet, but it gets tedious fast and photos are awkward to manage. A dedicated home inventory app is faster because you just snap a photo, add a name and location, and move on. That speed is the difference between finishing your inventory and abandoning it.

2. Go room by room

Don’t try to do the whole house at once. Start with one room, then move to the next. Work left to right so you don’t miss anything. For each item, capture:

  • A clear photo
  • A short name (“winter blankets”, “passport”)
  • The location (“hallway closet, top shelf”)
  • Optional notes — value, purchase date, serial number

3. Prioritize what matters

You don’t need to log every teaspoon. Focus first on valuables, electronics, seasonal items you store away, and anything you’ve ever struggled to find. You can always add more later.

4. Organize by location

Tag items with the room and the specific spot. This is what makes an inventory genuinely useful — a quick search tells you exactly where something is months later. Learn more in our guide on keeping track of where you put things.

5. Keep it backed up

Store your inventory in the cloud so it survives even if your belongings don’t. With iFoundIt, everything syncs across your devices automatically and can be exported to PDF.
